Got a server goin!
by David Kowis on Aug.18, 2007, under Source Mage, W00t!
My server that I’ve been working on all weekend works! Well, I was mostly working on the ISO generation scripts so that it’d be easy for me to generate ISOs to try to get that box to boot.
Apparently there’s a few things that make that computer die, one of them being IPMI, so that needed to not be anywhere in the kernel. Also it needed the old adaptec scsi driver not the new one. The new one only partially worked. Not sure what I’m going to do about that, may not have to do anything.
But it runs now! The next steps are to get it all set up to be my webserver and mailserver. Possibly even my router computer, but I’m not certain I want to do that. I’ve got sufficient network interfaces, and pci slots to do good stuff like that. I kinda like having my router seperate, but if I put it all on the same box, it’d be really easy to just turn everything else off during a power failure and I could simply just have the one main box going and still be on the intarwebs.
W00t For security!
by David Kowis on Aug.16, 2007, under Uncategorized
Well, it’s better security anyway. I’ve gotten the admin-ssl plugin installed for my site. So now logins and any administration for my blog is done over SSL. W00t for moderately more security.
Got a free alarm system
by David Kowis on Aug.13, 2007, under W00t!
W00t for FirstLine. They want to take business from ADT. Which is fine with me, as ADT sucked much. Their “service plan” really wasnt much of one at all. Labor costs: $75 for the first 30 minutes, $20 for each additional 15 minutes!!!1one!1!!ELevEn. I mean come on. This is ridiculous.
They wanted to make our house and advertisement house, which means we got a special rate and such. In return we put a little lighted sign out in the yard and put stickers on the windows.
The alarm system is cellular and wireless. So if we didn’t need a frikin phone line for the Internet connection (which we don’t because it’s fiber optic directly to the house. We’re being forced into an archaic system by the evil phone company. But that’s a rant for another time…) We’d just have the alarm and the internet. Not that the phone line is hooked to an actual phone anyway, since we just get telemarketer calls. Perhaps when I have lots more money I’ll do the asterisk thing, which might be fun :D
