I ramble on about my network upgrades.

Sorry if stuff is broken, not that anyone really reads this.

I yanked wordpress over to my “migration server” whilst I’m in the process of updating the site. I need to add a redirect for the source mage fallback. Although, a 404 will allow it to go onto the next fallback.

Tomorrow my cpu coolers arrive and the thing gets put together, at least I hope so. It might not get put together as I’ve got things to do in real life.

So for the most part I think this stuff copied over fairly atomically. I was able to copy over configs directly from the working server to this one. I’m fairly happy with the result. It’s probably not optimal, but it works.

So this server is a 64-bit Xen virtual machine running on a dual core amd64. It’s only temporary until I can get the real server up. I wanted to get this set up because I bet it’ll take me longer than a day to get the new box working. And it’ll give me time to try to set up mail in a truly virtual format. Possibly set up LDAP authentication too. Basically having this part alone I can dork with the rest of the network and still get the most important stuff: emails.

Oh man, if you could see the hacks I’ve done. I had updated glibc on my router and it crapped out too. So that’s been rebuilding like a mad man, and just finished as I’m typing this. So now I can cast shorewall, shorewall6, dhcp, djbdns, and squid and restore it’s working config. Then I can take out the linksys router that I bought for $20 that’s been holding the network together. It’s pretty scary. But it’s working. Just don’t look at it wrong… I think I’ll call this “Agile Networking” because I’ve had some serious, “OMG ADAPT NOW” moments. But it works, I can play EvE and I can build most things. Samba continues to work without issues, since it uses NetBIOS to find hosts. Speaking of which, I need to queue up the production of my battleship and I’m going to go to sleep.

Oh, and apologies to GoogleBot, because he’s goign to get a lot of 404s :(

It’s been a while since I posted something.

I recently read an opinion article from the Wall Street Journal written by Stuart Varny, who is apparently a host on the Fox Business Channel. The article was linked off of Drudge Report, which seems to have a fairly unbiased selection of news. Now I’m not usually one to take anything, without a grain of salt, that comes from the Fox “News” network, but this opinion does hit rather close to home. Unfortunately, it solely targets the “Left.” That is insufficient. The “Right” was doing the exact same thing only months ago. Fox news wasn’t complaining about it then, or perhaps they didn’t want to complain, since it was “thier” side that was doing it.

Regardless of Fox’s reasoning, truth is still true. The government likely does want to maintain control over these banks. It will make it easier for them to enact whatever plan they want.

I can’t remember the movie from which this quote is from:

“You remember the golden rule; He who controls the gold, makes the rules.”

(I think it was some disney movie, because I remember a creepy looking cartoon guy with a nasty grin…)

I never quite bought into the entire “global warming” thing. Sure, maybe the climate was changing some. It happens. Did we (humans) cause it in its entirety? Probably not. Are we another factor in a system so insanely huge that we don’t have any accurate models at all yet? Yep. Ever hear of the butterfly effect? That’s us, in the grand scheme of things.

Whilst it is good to take care of the planet we live on, things must be done within reason. We borrow our plante from our decendents, lets take care of it. Use common sense, don’t litter, take care of your vehicle. If you don’t need a hummer, don’t buy a hummer. Lets get more nuclear plants, those wind powered things just aren’t going to cut it. These are all reasonable steps in the right direction.

Someone has put together a pile of patches from the OpenSuse repository to bring Xen into the newer kernels for the greater good of the internet. Well, they really did it for gentoo, but patches are patches!

This is great for hardware support and the newer features.

It’s unfortunate that citrix is working so hard to make Xen obsolete. The open source community flourishes when the Release Early, Release Often(tm) doctrine is followed. It keeps people interested, advertises of bugs fixed, and well, is just good publicity. Unless all your releases suck. Of course, Source Mage doesn’t really have “releases” in the typical sense. We release new stable grimoires about every other month now. I may have even had some small contribution to the most recent one. But it’s not a new ISO or something tangible for people. Which seems to be a requisite for some odd reason. I have yet to figure it out…

I should really get my OMFG Automation project up and running. Have been kind of burnt out the last couple days.

It’s an interesting read. From the article:

“Our country allows fringe groups like the American Nazi Party to demonstrate, as long as they are peaceful. Americans are permitted to burn the national flag. In 1989, when so-called artist Andres Serrano displayed his work “Piss Christ” — a photo of a crucifix immersed in a bottle of urine — Americans protested peacefully and moved to cut off the federal funding that supported Mr. Serrano. There were no bombings of museums. No one was killed over this work that was deeply offensive to Christians.

Criticism of Islam, however, has led to violence and murder world-wide. Ayatollah Khomeini issued a fatwa calling for Muslims to kill Salman Rushdie over his 1988 book, “The Satanic Verses.” Although Mr. Rushdie has survived, two people associated with the book were stabbed, one fatally. The 2005 Danish editorial cartoons lampooning the prophet Muhammad led to numerous deaths. Dutch director Theodoor van Gogh was killed in 2004, several months after he made the film “Submission,” which described violence against women in Islamic societies. Ayaan Hirsi Ali, a former Dutch member of parliament who wrote the script for “Submission,” received death threats over the film and fled the country for the United States.”

“Religion of peace.” Right…

Also: “These liberties have been won through centuries of debate, conflict and bloodshed. Radical jihadists want to sacrifice all we have learned by returning to a primitive and intolerant world. While modern society invites such radicals to peacefully exercise their faith, we cannot and will not sacrifice our fundamental freedoms.” That sums it up.

It’ll be nice to use as protest material when ATT tries to implement metered lines. Of course, this is assuming that I actually use more than 40GB in a month. We’ll see.
